What to Expect

The Sliabh Beagh Hotel and Tourism Centre at Knockatallon, in the Tydavnet area north of Monaghan town, runs a social dancing night on selected Sunday evenings from 9:30pm. This is old-style ballroom and country dancing rather than a nightclub: couples and set dancers turn out for a band or duo working through country and ballroom standards in a hotel that doubles as the area’s tourism information point by day.

The nights are not weekly. Monaghan Tourism’s official calendar lists them roughly every three weeks through the autumn, with confirmed dates of Sunday 16 August, Sunday 6 September, Sunday 27 September, Sunday 18 October and Sunday 8 November 2026. The performing act changes from date to date and is usually announced on the hotel’s Facebook page in the week beforehand rather than months ahead. No admission price is published on the tourism listing, so check with the hotel or pay on the door. Given the gaps between dates and the rural location, ringing ahead is worthwhile if you are travelling any distance for it. This is a long-established fixture of Sunday night life in north Monaghan and the crowd tends to be regulars who know each other, so it is a welcoming room if you dance and a quiet one if you do not.

Getting There

The hotel is at Knockatallon, off the R186 in the Tydavnet area, roughly a 15-minute drive north of Monaghan town towards the Fermanagh border. There is parking on site. There is no evening public transport to the door, so a car or a taxi from Monaghan town is the practical option, and worth arranging in advance for a 9:30pm start on a Sunday.
