What to Expect

Farming the System is Síolta Chroí’s six-week introduction to regenerative agriculture, and the Monaghan run starts on Thursday 8 October 2026 with an evening session from 6pm to 8pm at the centre outside Carrickmacross. It is a course rather than a one-off talk, built for farmers who want to make a start on changing how they manage ground rather than just read about it.

The six weekly sessions work through soil health, animal grazing, trees and direct selling, moving from the underlying principles in the early weeks to putting a plan together for your own holding by the end. Síolta Chroí describe the aim as building the knowledge, skills and motivation for farmers to take the first steps into regenerative practice, which in a county of small drumlin farms with heavy ground usually means grazing management, soil biology, hedgerows and trees, and finding routes to market that pay for the change. The evening slot is chosen to suit people working during the day. Pricing runs on the centre’s three tiers, €90 subsidised, €120 standard and €150 contributive, all covering the same course materials and instruction, with the higher rate helping fund the subsidised places.

Getting There

Síolta Chroí is at Áth an Chlocháin in the countryside outside Carrickmacross in south Monaghan, a short drive from the town on local roads. Carrickmacross is on the N2, roughly 90 minutes from Dublin and a little over an hour from Belfast, with the M1 through Ardee an alternative. There is no public transport to the centre, so plan to drive. Parking is on site. Since the sessions run into the evening from October onwards, the last stretch will be in the dark on unlit country roads, so use the Eircode from your booking confirmation and take the bends carefully.
