At The Garage Theatre · Monaghan Education Campus, Armagh Road, Monaghan, Co. Monaghan H18 XE98
This is a working session for young performers aged 13 to 18, run at the Garage Theatre by facilitator Grainne Duffy on the morning of Saturday 3 October. It runs from 10am to 1pm and is built around practical exercises and live performance rather than theory. The four areas covered are vocal projection and clarity, building stage confidence and presence, song interpretation and delivery, and working as part of an ensemble. Participants spend the morning putting each of those to use in front of the room rather than taking notes on them.
The draw for anyone who has only ever performed in a school hall is the venue itself. Participants get access to the actual Garage Theatre stage, the rehearsal spaces and the dressing rooms, so the exercises happen in the same conditions a real performance would. That makes it useful preparation for anyone with an audition coming up, a part in a school or youth theatre production, or a first solo spot, and it suits young people who simply want to get more comfortable being heard. At €10 for three hours in a professional venue it is priced to be accessible, and places are limited, so booking is essential rather than optional. Bookings go through the Garage Theatre’s online ticketing system or the box office by phone.
The Garage Theatre is on the Monaghan Education Campus off the Armagh Road, on the eastern side of Monaghan town and a short walk from Church Square. There is parking on the campus, which is straightforward on a Saturday morning. Monaghan town sits on the N2 Dublin to Derry road, with the N12 to Armagh and the N54 to Cavan. Bus Éireann Expressway services on the Dublin to northwest route stop in the town centre, and Carrickmacross, Castleblayney and Clones are all within a half-hour drive.
