Grand Canal Way parkrun is a free, timed 5k that sets off every Saturday morning along the towpath in Tullamore, open to walkers, joggers and runners of any standard. It is one of two weekly parkrun events in Offaly, alongside Mount Lucas, and draws a regular mix of club athletes, families and first-timers who use it as a low-pressure way to keep active at the weekend. Like every parkrun, it is timed but not a race, and volunteers keep the event running week to week.
The course is a flat, out-and-back 5000m route run entirely on the permanent towpath along the Grand Canal Way, making it suitable for buggies, wheelchair users and those walking the distance as well as runners. Results are processed from a barcode scan at the finish, so first-timers need to register once on the parkrun website and bring a printed or saved barcode before their first run. After the run, a regular group heads for post-parkrun coffee at The Old Warehouse on Bury Quay, which has become as much a part of the weekly routine as the run itself. Volunteers are needed every week to marshal, scan barcodes and time finishers, and new volunteers are always welcome even if they have never run a parkrun themselves.
The event starts and finishes on the Grand Canal Way off Callary Street, close to Tullamore town centre, with street parking nearby and the canal towpath itself easy to reach on foot from most of the town.
Tullamore’s Grand Canal harbour, the Tullamore D.E.W. distillery and the town’s shops and cafes are all within easy walking distance of the parkrun start, making it simple to turn a Saturday morning run into a longer visit. There is more to see in Tullamore and across Co. Offaly.
