What to Expect

Mick Flannery plays the Fortuna Spiegeltent in Wexford town on Thursday 15 October, the first of the Spiegeltent Festival’s October music dates. The Cork singer-songwriter has been one of the steadier presences in Irish songwriting for two decades, and his work sits at the sparse, narrative end of the form, which fits the scale of a spiegeltent better than a large hall.

The Fortuna Spiegeltent is a mirrored travelling pavilion, wood-panelled and intimate, and the festival programmes it with a mix of contemporary music, 1980s acts, trad and folk, and comedy. Flannery’s night opens a run that also takes in Cry Before Dawn on 16 October, The Scratch and Keith Barry on 23 October, Gavin James and Chris Kent on 24 October, Foy Vance on 27 October, Paul Brady on 29 October, and Deirdre O’Kane, Neil Delamere and Jamie McIntyre across 30 and 31 October. The festival dates overlap with Wexford Festival Opera, so the town is at its busiest.

Getting There

The Fortuna Spiegeltent is pitched in Wexford town during the festival, within walking distance of the quay front and the main street. Drive in on the N11 from Dublin and Gorey or the N25 from New Ross and Rosslare Europort. Wexford O’Hanrahan railway station, on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line, is a short walk from the town centre. Parking is at a premium during festival fortnight, so use the quay front car parks and allow extra time, or come by train and walk.
