Sightless Cinema is Solstice Arts Centre’s ongoing project empowering adults who are blind or visually impaired to work as artistic collaborators and creators in audio theatre. Under creative director Ciaran Taylor, participants meet weekly at the centre to explore, devise, perform and record radio drama, and Lost and Found is the latest finished piece to come out of that process, staged as a live performance evening on Halloween night.
Rather than a conventional stage play, Sightless Cinema’s work is built and performed as audio theatre, radio drama made live, where sound, voice and performance carry the story without relying on visual spectacle. The project has previously presented pieces including Home and In the Dark, developed the same way, through weekly workshop sessions where the participants themselves shape the material rather than simply performing someone else’s script. That process matters as much as the finished show: it is genuinely disability-led work, made by the people it is about, not work made for them. For an audience, that translates into a performance style that leans on atmosphere, voice acting and sound design rather than costume and set, and it rewards listening closely. The Friday workshop sessions that underpin the project run at Solstice throughout the year, so Lost and Found represents a public showing of work built up over recent months.
Solstice Arts Centre is Meath’s main publicly funded arts venue and stages this kind of accessible, participant-led work alongside its wider theatre and comedy programme.
