Navan Theatre Group: The Field

Navan Theatre Group brings one of the great Irish stage dramas to their home venue this November, staging John B. Keane’s The Field across five nights at Solstice Arts Centre. Directed by Des Lynch, the production is the group’s main autumn offering for 2026.

What to expect

The Field is set in rural Ireland and centres on Bull McCabe, a tenant farmer whose obsessive attachment to a small field he has worked for years drives the play toward tragedy when an outsider threatens to outbid him for it at auction. Keane’s script is one of the most performed works in the Irish amateur drama canon, prized for a central role that gives a strong actor enormous range and for a story that still lands hard on audiences familiar with land, family and small-town power. Navan Theatre Group is a long-established amateur company with a track record of taking on demanding material, and staging it at Solstice gives the cast a proper 320-seat theatre with full lighting and sound rather than a borrowed hall. A five-night run, Tuesday 24 through Saturday 28 November, is a substantial commitment for an amateur group and signals this is being treated as the season’s centrepiece production.

Given the play’s standing and the length of the run, booking ahead through Solstice is sensible rather than relying on the door.

Getting there

Solstice Arts Centre is on Railway Street in Navan town centre. Bus Eireann and Dublin Coach both serve Navan from Dublin, with the journey taking around an hour, and the bus stops are a short walk from the venue. Drivers can use metered on-street parking on Railway Street or the Fairgreen car park off Circular Road. Navan sits on the N3 roughly 50km north-west of Dublin.
