Bru na Boinne - Newgrange and Knowth Guided Tours

At Bru na Boinne Visitor Centre · Donore, Co. Meath

Newgrange passage tomb entrance stone with megalithic spirals, Bru na Boinne, Co. Meath

The Bru na Boinne Visitor Centre at Donore is the gateway to the Newgrange and Knowth passage tombs, two of the world’s most significant Neolithic monuments. Guided tours run daily through the main 2026 season, from 1 March to 1 November, with the site’s endDate in this listing marking the close of that season on 1 November 2026.

What to expect

All access to the passage tombs is by guided OPW tour only; there is no independent entry, and visitors travel out to the monuments by shuttle bus from the visitor centre. Three tour options run through the season: the main Bru na Boinne tour taking in the visitor centre exhibition plus the Newgrange chamber, a Newgrange Tour and Exhibition (limited to two departures a day), and a Knowth Tour and Exhibition (limited to one a day, and without access to the Knowth chamber itself, which is not open to visitors). The visitor centre exhibition covers the archaeology and history of the wider Bru na Boinne landscape before the guided element begins. Newgrange’s chamber is famous for its alignment with the winter solstice sunrise, and the guides explain this alignment as part of the tour.

Getting there

The Bru na Boinne Visitor Centre is at Donore, Co. Meath, signposted from the N51 between Drogheda and Slane. The nearest town is Drogheda, about 8km away. Public transport to the site is limited, so a car is the most practical option; a taxi from Drogheda train station is a common alternative.

While you’re in Donore

Donore is a small village close to the Boyne, with the wider Bru na Boinne UNESCO landscape, including Knowth and Dowth, spread across the surrounding countryside. There is more to see across Co. Meath.
