A midweek midterm screening of the third film in the Polish animated series about a household of runaway socks, shown in Polish with English subtitles. The Linenhall sets the premise out plainly: “A detective mystery, Wild West duels, and journeys into outer space are only the beginning! Can a sock become a cunning sheriff, a brilliant detective, a famous fashion designer, or even… an intergalactic traveller?” It runs 55 minutes, so it fits a young attention span, and the humour is pitched to work for the adults in the room as well.
The film adapts the bestselling books by Justyna Bednarek and Daniel de Latour, produced by Anima-pol with a large Polish voice cast. It is programmed as part of Roola Boola Children’s Arts Festival, the Linenhall’s annual festival over the October bank holiday period, and at €3 a ticket it is one of the cheapest things in the programme. It is rated 5 and over and children must be accompanied by an adult. For Castlebar’s Polish-speaking families it is a rare chance to see a current Polish release on a local screen, and the subtitles mean nobody else is locked out.
The Linenhall is on Linenhall Street in the middle of Castlebar, a short walk from The Mall and the main square. Driving in, the N5 runs west from Dublin through Longford and Roscommon, the N84 comes north from Galway, the N60 links Claremorris and Roscommon, and the N58 arrives from Ballina and Foxford. Irish Rail runs Dublin Heuston to Castlebar via Manulla Junction, with the station a short walk from the centre. Bus Eireann connects Castlebar with Galway, Sligo, Westport and Ballina. Street parking around Linenhall Street is pay-and-display and there are larger car parks a few minutes away, which is worth knowing at midday during midterm.
