Tirdhreacha is a free exhibition of abstract paintings by Eamann Cosgrave at Aras Inis Gluaire, the bilingual arts centre in Belmullet. The Irish title translates as landscapes, and Cosgrave’s source is the country immediately around him: the macro elements of ocean, hills and mountains, and the micro elements of plants, rocks and seaweed.
The paintings are not representational views. Cosgrave builds each piece so that composition and colour carry the work in their own right, rather than serving as accompaniment to a recognisable scene. The scale of reference shifts across the show, from large natural forms down to close detail, but the emphasis stays on form and colour as the primary concern. On the Mullet peninsula, where the light and the weather change the same stretch of coast several times in an afternoon, that approach makes obvious sense. Admission is free and the exhibition runs until 4 September 2026. Aras Inis Gluaire is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm, and it describes itself as Ireland’s first bilingual arts centre.
Aras Inis Gluaire is at the Belmullet Civic Centre in the town of Belmullet, at the neck of the Mullet peninsula in north west Mayo. By road it is the R313 west from Bangor Erris, which is reached on the N59 from Ballina or from Newport and Mulranny. Allow around an hour and a half from Castlebar and about an hour and ten minutes from Ballina. Bus Eireann route 446 connects Ballina with Belmullet, and Local Link services cover the peninsula and the Erris villages. There is parking at the civic centre and around the town square.
