Tírdhreacha is a free show of paintings by Eamann Cosgrave in the gallery at Áras Inis Gluaire, the arts centre in Belmullet. The Irish title means landscapes, and Cosgrave is straightforward about where the work comes from: “The main inspiration for my work is Nature as in the landscape around me, from the macro elements such as the ocean, the hills and mountains, to the micro elements such as plants, rocks, seaweed.”
What he does with that source material is less literal than the title suggests. The paintings put form and colour first, treating them as an aesthetic experience in their own right rather than as a means of describing a particular hill or shoreline. Seen in Erris, where the ocean and the bog are the two dominant facts of the place, that shift from record to response is the interesting part of the show. Áras Inis Gluaire is the main cultural building in the Belmullet peninsula and combines a theatre, gallery and library, so the exhibition is easy to combine with whatever else is on. There is no admission charge and no booking, and the gallery is open through normal building hours.
Belmullet sits at the neck of the Mullet peninsula in Erris, at the end of the R313. That road leaves the N59 at Bangor Erris, which is about 60km from Ballina by way of Crossmolina and roughly the same distance from Newport heading north. Allow around an hour and fifteen minutes from Ballina and closer to an hour and a half from Castlebar. Bus Eireann route 446 runs between Ballina and Belmullet. Áras Inis Gluaire is close to the centre of the town with parking on site and on the surrounding streets. There is no rail service to Erris, so the nearest station is Ballina.
