What to Expect

Creative Coffee is the Linenhall’s monthly get-together for working artists, and the September edition has artist John Brady as guest speaker. Brady paints subjects drawn from his travels and keeps an extensive archive of sketchbooks going back decades. His practice turns those stored sketches and memories into painted and sculptural work at a range of scales and in a range of materials, so the talk covers what happens between a quick drawing made abroad and a finished piece made at home.

The wider Creative Coffee series exists as a support network rather than a lecture series. Visual and performing artists across disciplines are invited, the format is conversational, and the Linenhall’s stated aim is to give artists a chance to re-energise among their peers. It is free and open to artists of all disciplines and interests, though advance booking is recommended because the room fills. The strand is supported by Mayo Arts Office and sits alongside the Linenhall’s other artist supports, including the free Artist Monthly Meet on the last Saturday of each month and the Bolay mentorship programme.

Getting There

The Linenhall is on Linenhall Street in the centre of Castlebar, close to The Mall. By car, the N5 runs west from Dublin through Longford and Roscommon, the N84 comes north from Galway, the N60 connects Claremorris and Roscommon, and the N58 comes down from Ballina and Foxford. Irish Rail services from Dublin Heuston reach Castlebar via Manulla Junction, with the station a short walk from the town centre. Bus Eireann links Castlebar with Galway, Sligo, Westport and Ballina. Street parking is pay-and-display and charges usually end in the early evening, with larger car parks a short walk away.
