Climate Creation: Zine Workshop

What to Expect

A zine is a small, handmade magazine, cheap to make and impossible to get wrong, and this three-hour workshop at the Linenhall uses that format to get people talking about what they have actually seen change in their own patch of Mayo. Participants make a zine about the changes they notice in their local environment, and the making is the way into a conversation about how climate change, biodiversity loss and water quality show up at a scale you can walk to.

The session runs from 2pm to 5pm on Friday 9 October, is for adults aged 18 and over, and all materials are provided. It is part of a research project called Understanding Public Perceptions of Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss, and Water Quality, funded by the Co-Centre for Climate, Biodiversity and Water at Dublin City University, and it is facilitated by Dr Cormac Cleary. Participants keep the zine they make and receive a voucher in recognition of their time. Advance booking is essential and places are limited. No previous experience of art, printmaking or writing is needed, which is largely the point of using zines rather than any other medium.

Getting There

The Linenhall is on Linenhall Street in the middle of Castlebar, a couple of minutes’ walk from The Mall and the main square. By road, the N5 runs west from Dublin through Longford and Roscommon, the N84 north from Galway, the N60 from Claremorris and Roscommon, and the N58 from Ballina and Foxford. Irish Rail runs Dublin Heuston to Castlebar services via Manulla Junction, with the station a short walk from the centre. Bus Eireann connects Castlebar with Galway, Sligo, Westport and Ballina. Street parking nearby is pay-and-display, with bigger car parks a short walk away.
