Nano Reid: A Life in Paint - Walking Tour, Drogheda

What to Expect

Highlanes Gallery leads a two hour walking tour through Drogheda following the life of Nano Reid, the painter born in the town in 1900 and one of the most significant Irish artists of the twentieth century. Reid represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1950 alongside Norah McGuinness, and she spent much of her working life in and around Drogheda, painting the Boyne valley landscape and the people in it.

The gallery holds a major body of Reid’s work in its permanent collection, so the tour connects buildings and streets in the town to paintings you can go and look at afterwards. It runs on a Friday afternoon from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, booked through Eventbrite. Places on guided tours of this kind are limited by group size, so it is worth registering rather than turning up on spec.

Getting There

Highlanes Gallery is at 36 Saint Laurence Street, on the pedestrianised main street in the centre of Drogheda, a minute from the Tholsel. Drivers coming from Dublin, Dundalk or Navan leave the M1 at junction 9 or 10 and follow the town centre signs. Park at the Laurence Shopping Centre a short walk away or at Scotch Hall across the Boyne, or use on-street spaces nearby. Drogheda MacBride railway station is roughly 15 minutes on foot, with Dublin and Belfast services, and Bus Éireann and Matthews coaches stop on the Dublin Road and at the Donore Road bus station.
