What to Expect

The Our Lady Queen of Peace Pastoral Area lists a weekly Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal at St Peter’s Church in Dromiskin every Monday at 7pm. It is one of the fixed weekly devotions across a grouping of four mid-Louth parishes, Darver and Dromiskin, Kilkerley, Knockbridge and Louth village, which between them cover six churches and a population of a little over four thousand people. The novena is short by the standards of a full Mass and draws a regular local congregation rather than a crowd, which is much of its appeal. Anyone is welcome to call in.

The Miraculous Medal devotion traces back to 1830, when Catherine Labouré, a novice with the Daughters of Charity in Paris, reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary asking that a medal be struck to the design she was shown. The medal spread quickly through Ireland in the nineteenth century, and the weekly Monday novena attached to it is still kept in parishes around the country. Dromiskin itself is worth a short look while you are there. The village has a round tower and a high cross on the site of an early monastic settlement associated with St Ronan, a few steps from the present church, and the whole cluster sits just off the old Dundalk to Castlebellingham road.

Getting There

Dromiskin sits between Dundalk and Castlebellingham in mid-Louth, roughly 12km south of Dundalk. From the M1, take junction 16 or 17 and follow the R132 old road, then turn into the village. There is parking at the church and on the village street. Bus Éireann and Local Link services on the Dundalk to Drogheda corridor stop on the R132 nearby, but evening services are limited, so a car is the practical option for a 7pm start.
