Drogheda Brass Band takes over the courtyard at Highlanes Gallery for an hour of live playing on a Sunday afternoon in the middle of August. The performance runs from 1:50 PM to 2:50 PM and forms part of Summer Sundays at the Gallery, the strand of free weekend programming Highlanes runs through the summer months alongside its exhibitions.
The courtyard sits behind the gallery’s Saint Laurence Street frontage, in what was originally the Franciscan friary church that the building was converted from. It is an unusual acoustic for a brass band, hard-surfaced and enclosed, and the setting means you can pair the music with a walk through whatever is hanging in the galleries the same afternoon. Admission to Highlanes is free, and the exhibitions open across that weekend include the Young Creatives Art Competition marking the gallery’s 20th year.
Highlanes Gallery is at 36 Saint Laurence Street, on the main pedestrian spine of Drogheda town centre a minute from the Tholsel and West Street. Drivers should leave the M1 at junction 9 or 10 and follow the town centre signs. The gallery recommends the Laurence Shopping Centre car park or on-street parking nearby. Drogheda MacBride railway station is roughly a 15 minute walk across the Boyne, with Dublin and Belfast services, and Bus Éireann and Matthews coaches stop on the Dublin Road and at the Donore Road bus station.
