Droichead Arts Centre closes out the summer with a free two day festival built around local and emerging artists. The programme runs across both afternoons and combines art exhibitions with hands on creative workshops, so there is something to look at and something to do rather than one or the other. Live jazz and other music performances run through the building alongside the visual work, and refreshments are served on site.
The emphasis is on participation. The workshops are pitched at people who want to make something on the day rather than watch a demonstration, and the exhibiting artists are drawn from the Drogheda and wider north Louth scene rather than touring shows. Droichead is a working arts centre with gallery spaces, a theatre and studios in the one building on Stockwell Street, which is what allows several strands to run at the same time over a three hour window. Entry is free for the whole weekend, which makes it an easy one to drop into for an hour rather than commit a full day to.
Droichead Arts Centre is on Stockwell Street in central Drogheda, a short walk from West Street and the Tholsel, and next door to Drogheda Library. Drogheda is signposted from junctions 9 and 10 of the M1, and the Scotch Hall and town centre multi storey car parks are both within a few minutes’ walk. Drogheda MacBride railway station is on the Dublin to Belfast line with frequent commuter services, about a fifteen minute walk across the Boyne from Stockwell Street. Bus Eireann and Matthews coaches serve the town from Dublin and Dundalk.
