Carlingford Library hosts an hour of traditional Irish music with Brendan McCreanor on the Saturday afternoon of National Heritage Week. The performance runs from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM, it is free, and no booking is required, so you can turn up on the day.
Louth Libraries programme a run of Heritage Week events across their branches in Dundalk, Drogheda, Ardee, Dunleer and Carlingford, mixing talks, workshops and performances. This is the Carlingford strand of that programme and it fits the setting: the village is one of the busiest heritage towns on the Cooley peninsula and Heritage Week weekend brings visitors in numbers. A free hour of trad in the library is a quieter alternative to the pubs on the square, and it is suitable for all ages.
Carlingford sits on the Cooley peninsula on the northern shore of Carlingford Lough, about 20 kilometres north east of Dundalk on the R173. From the M1, leave at junction 18 for Dundalk and follow signs for Carlingford through Ballymascanlon and Riverstown. Public parking is available at the harbour and at the car park near the Heritage Centre, though the village fills up on Heritage Week weekends so arrive early. Bus Éireann route 161 links Dundalk with Carlingford and Omeath, and the Carlingford Lough Greenway runs into the village from Omeath for anyone arriving on foot or by bike.
