Roots and Rhythms: Session in the Green, Edgeworthstown

What to Expect

Roots and Rhythms takes over The Green in the middle of Edgeworthstown for an hour and a half of music, song, dance and storytelling on Friday 21 August. The billing is “where traditional sounds meet the music of today”, and the programme mixes older repertoire with newer material rather than sticking to a straight trad session format.

The performers are drawn from the local Comhaltas scene and include musicians who have won at county, Leinster and All-Ireland level. Three groups put the night together: The Edgeworth Society, the Joe Callaghan branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, and the Mostrim Players. It runs as part of the wider National Heritage Week programme around Edgeworthstown and the Maria Edgeworth Centre, which also hosts a Celtic Kindness evening on 20 August and a literary stroll with tea and treats on 23 August.

This is an outdoor event and depends on the weather. Bring a folding chair or a rug if you want to sit, because seating on The Green is limited.

Getting There

Edgeworthstown, also known as Mostrim, sits on the N4 roughly 14 kilometres east of Longford town and about 30 kilometres north west of Mullingar. The Green is in the village centre, a short walk from the main crossroads where the N4 meets the R395 Granard road, and the Maria Edgeworth Centre on the Ballymahon Road is a few minutes away on foot.

Edgeworthstown railway station is in the village itself, on the Dublin Connolly to Sligo line, which makes this one of the easier Longford events to reach without a car. Bus Eireann route 23 between Dublin and Sligo also stops here. Drivers will find on-street parking around the village centre and in the side streets off the main road, though it fills up on a Friday evening.
