Samhain: Witches are Wise Women at PV's, Longford

What to Expect

Witches are Wise Women reframes the Halloween witch as what she was before the word turned against her: a prophet, a carer and a healer. The night is built around three archetypal figures standing for those three roles, and it opens with the story of Tlachtga lighting the first Samhain fire on the Hill of Ward thousands of years ago, the origin point most historians reach for when tracing Halloween back to Ireland.

The production mixes live music, storytelling and theatrical staging rather than sticking to one form, and it includes a celebrity impersonator alongside the mythological material, so the tone swings between the old stories and straight entertainment. The organisers describe it as a celebration of myth, memory and mischief.

It is part of Samhain in the Heartlands, the Longford and Westmeath strand of the Ireland, Home of Halloween season, which fills the last week of October across both counties with processions, tours and storytelling nights.

Getting There

PV’s is on Ballymahon Street in the centre of Longford town, at the town-centre end of the street close to the Market Square and a few minutes’ walk from Main Street. Longford is on the N4 between Dublin and Sligo and the town centre is signposted from both approaches.

Longford railway station on the Dublin Connolly to Sligo line is about a ten minute walk away, though late evening services are limited on a Thursday, so check the last train home before you book. Bus Eireann and Local Link services stop in the town centre. Drivers will find pay and display parking on Ballymahon Street and free evening parking in the town car parks off Church Street and Dublin Street after 6:00 PM.
