Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses at St Mel's Cathedral

At St Mel's Cathedral · Longford Town, Co. Longford

A cathedral interior lit for a Christmas Eve service

What to expect

St Mel’s Cathedral has kept the same sequence of Christmas services for many years. On Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December 2026, confessions run from 10.30am to 6pm for anyone who wants to go before the holiday itself. The Cathedral Choir sings carols from 9.30pm, leading into the Vigil Mass at 10pm, which is the cathedral’s main Christmas Eve liturgy and its busiest service of the year.

Christmas Day, 25 December, has four Masses at St Mel’s: 8am, 10am, 11.30am and 1pm, spreading attendance across the morning and early afternoon rather than holding everyone at a single service. Two smaller churches in the wider parish add their own Christmas Day Mass for people closer to those chapels than the town centre: Curry Church at 9.30am and Shroid at 10.30am.

St Mel’s is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, a Neoclassical stone building begun in 1840 and completed in 1856, with a belfry added in 1860 and a portico in 1889. It was gutted by fire on Christmas Day 2009 and reopened after a lengthy restoration, which is part of why the Christmas liturgies carry the weight they do in the town. Its size means the Vigil Mass in particular draws a large crowd from Longford town and the surrounding parishes, so arriving in good time is worth it, especially for anyone who wants to hear the carols beforehand. All Christmas services are free to attend and need no booking. For anyone who cannot travel, the parish makes its services available to watch online through longfordparish.com.

The times above are the cathedral’s long-standing Christmas pattern rather than a fresh announcement for this year. The parish publishes its confirmed Christmas schedule in the newsletter and on longfordparish.com during Advent, so anyone travelling in should check there once December begins in case a Mass time has been added or dropped.

Getting there

St Mel’s Cathedral stands in the centre of Longford town, a short walk from the Dublin Street and Main Street shopping area. The town sits on the N4 and N5 national roads, roughly 90 minutes from Dublin by car, and Longford railway station has direct services from Dublin Connolly on the Sligo line. The station and the town’s Bus Eireann stops are both within a short walk of the cathedral.
