Service of Reconciliation at St Mel's Cathedral

At St Mel's Cathedral · Longford Town, Co. Longford

Empty pews inside a cathedral before an evening service

What to expect

St Mel’s Cathedral holds a Service of Reconciliation on the Sunday before Christmas each year, giving parishioners a dedicated slot for confession in the run-up to the holiday rather than relying on the cathedral’s ordinary weekday confession times. On the cathedral’s long-standing pattern that puts it on Sunday 20 December at 5pm in 2026, the last Sunday before Christmas Day.

The service typically opens with communal prayer and readings before individual confession is heard, usually with more than one priest available so the process moves faster than a normal Saturday confession slot. It is aimed at anyone who wants to go to confession before Christmas without the crush of Christmas Eve itself, when the cathedral is at its busiest with carols and the Vigil Mass. There is no need to book and no charge to attend.

This service sits alongside the cathedral’s separate Christmas Eve confession window, which runs from 10.30am to 6pm on 24 December, giving parishioners two separate opportunities in the same week to go before the 25th. Anyone unsure of the format can simply arrive for the start of the service and follow the priest’s direction from there. It is a short, low-key service by cathedral standards and is not part of a Mass, and no one is under any obligation to make a confession simply for attending.

Advent reconciliation services of this kind are common across Irish parishes in the two or three weeks before Christmas, and St Mel’s timing on the fourth Sunday of Advent fits that wider pattern. It is aimed squarely at people who find the format easier in a group setting than turning up alone on an ordinary Saturday.

The 5pm slot is the cathedral’s established one rather than a date announced for this year specifically, so it is worth checking the parish newsletter or longfordparish.com once Advent starts to confirm the time before travelling in from outside the town.

Getting there

St Mel’s Cathedral is in the centre of Longford town, close to the Dublin Street and Main Street shopping streets. The town sits on the N4 and N5 national roads, and Longford railway station, on the Dublin to Sligo line, is a short walk from the cathedral. Bus Eireann services also stop in the town centre. As the service falls on a Sunday evening in December, allowing extra time to find parking is sensible, since the town centre is often busy with pre-Christmas shoppers earlier in the day.
