Beeswax Candle Making Workshop at The Farmhouse, Abbeyshrule

What to Expect

The Farmhouse in Abbeyshrule runs a three hour hands-on candle making workshop on two Saturdays in October, built around Samhain traditions. Participants work with natural beeswax and make three different types in the session: hand-dipped tapers, rolled beeswax candles and moulded candles. That progression means you leave with a working understanding of the three main techniques rather than one finished object.

The second half turns to intention candles, scented and decorated with dried herbs and flowers grown on the farm, made around themes of protection, love, calm, abundance and grounding. Weather permitting, the group also walks out to the beehives to see where the wax comes from and how it is processed, which closes the loop between the hive and the finished candle.

Hot wax is involved throughout, so the workshop is pitched at ages ten and upward and every child must be accompanied by an adult. Refreshments are served.

Getting There

Abbeyshrule is in the south east corner of County Longford, close to the Westmeath border and the Royal Canal, roughly 12 kilometres south east of Ballymahon and about 30 kilometres from Longford town. It is best known for its aerodrome and its Cistercian abbey ruins.

From Longford, take the N55 or R392 south towards Ballymahon then follow the R393 and local roads east to Abbeyshrule. From Mullingar, head west on the R392 through Ballynacargy. From Dublin, leave the N4 at Kinnegad and follow the R392 west. The roads in are narrow country lanes, so allow a little extra time. There is parking on site at the farm. There is no useful public transport to Abbeyshrule, so a car or a lift is needed.
