Paintings hung salon style in the gallery at Lismore Castle Arts

What to Expect

Salon is the main 2026 exhibition at Lismore Castle Arts and runs daily until Sunday 25 October. Curated by Matthew Higgs, it gathers roughly forty paintings staged as a theatrical mise-en-scene across the gallery spaces. The works are largely figurative and domestic in scale, and they are hung salon style, close together and stacked, which is a deliberate reversal of the usual contemporary gallery habit of giving every canvas its own wall.

The artist list is long and international: Anthony Banks, Karen Barbour, Margot Bergman, Casey Bolding, Lisa Brice, David Byrd, Gillian Carnegie, Diana Cepleanu, Billy Childish, Caroline Coon, Jane Corrigan, Andrew Cranston, Ann Craven, Verne Dawson, Brian DeGraw, Kaye Donachie, Simone Kennedy Doig, Denzil Forrester, Carole Gibbons, Huddie Hamper, Paul Housley, Brook Hsu, Merlin James, Chantal Joffe, Behrang Karimi, Adam Keay, Florian Krewer, Na Kim, Jennifer J. Lee, Bill Lynch, Alastair MacKinven, John Maclean, Elizabeth Magill, Alissa McKendrick, Noel McKenna, Stephen McKenna, Walter Price, Daisy Sheff, Amy Sheffer, Mike Silva, Padraig Timoney and Caroline Walker. Chairs borrowed from Lismore Castle itself are placed through the rooms so visitors can sit and stay with the work rather than move through it.
