The Mariettas at the Corn Mill Theatre, Carrigallen

At Corn Mill Theatre and Arts Centre · Main Street, Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim, H12 F4W0

Comedy play about a 1960s Irish showband staged at the Corn Mill Theatre

What to Expect

The Mariettas is a comedy by Niamh Gleeson about an all-female showband trying to make it in 1960s Ireland, and Pothole Productions bring it to the Corn Mill Theatre in Carrigallen on Saturday 10 October. The billing sums the premise up neatly: five girls, one dream, and biscuits that get stuck in your teeth. The script mixes showband-era hits with Irish comedy, so the songs are part of the story rather than an interval turn.

Five Cavan-based actresses carry the whole thing between them. Aoife Shalvey, Vanessa Galligan, Louise Callan, Saidhbh O’Reilly and Eimear Gilsenan play a cast of around twenty characters, switching in and out of ballroom managers, band members and hangers-on as the story moves. For an audience in south Leitrim and the neighbouring Cavan parishes the ballroom period is close to home, and the show plays to that. Doors open half an hour before the 8pm curtain.
