At Drumshanbo and Ballinamore Riversdale swimming pools · Riversdale, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim, N41 AY20
Water Safety Ireland runs its Leitrim pool lifeguard course over roughly a fortnight at the end of August and start of September 2026, split between pool sessions in Drumshanbo and at Riversdale in Ballinamore and mandatory theory classes delivered on Zoom. Candidates who complete it come out with a certified Level 2 lifeguard qualification, the standard requirement for working on a pool deck in Ireland.
The pool work starts on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August, each day from 8am to 2pm, followed by two evening sessions on Tuesday 2 September and Tuesday 9 September from 5pm to 7.30pm. The Zoom theory classes fall on 31 August, 1 September and 3 September, each running 7pm to 9pm, and attendance at all three is compulsory. Content spans water rescue technique, casualty handling, CPR and first aid. This is a working qualification rather than a taster, so candidates need a solid level of swimming before starting. Booking is through Eventbrite and the organisers operate a strict no-refunds policy, so check the dates against your own diary before paying.
Ballinamore is on the R202 in east Leitrim, about 25 minutes from Carrick-on-Shannon and 30 minutes from Cavan town, with Riversdale Leisure Centre signposted on the edge of the town and parking on site. Drumshanbo lies northwest of Carrick-on-Shannon on the R280, roughly 20 minutes away, with parking at the pool. With an 8am start on the first two mornings, allow extra travel time and plan for the two venues being about 30 minutes apart.
