What to Expect

Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident is the October title in The Dock’s Classic Cinema strand and screens twice on Wednesday 7 October, at 11.30am and at 7pm. The story follows Vahid, a mechanic who believes he has run into the man who tortured him in prison. The only thing he has to go on is the squeak of a distinctive prosthetic leg, so he kidnaps the man and brings in other former prisoners to help him decide whether they have the right person at all.

What follows is less a revenge thriller than an argument, with the group forced to weigh certainty, memory and what they are willing to do about it. The film won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. It runs 105 minutes, is in Farsi with English subtitles, and carries a 15A certificate, with the venue flagging occasional strong language, violent scenes and references to torture and sexual assault. As with the rest of the series, the morning show is the cheaper option and the 7pm screening is the main evening event.

Getting There

The Dock occupies the former courthouse on St George’s Terrace, in the centre of Carrick-on-Shannon beside the Shannon bridge. The town sits on the N4 Dublin to Sligo road, and the R280 links it north to Leitrim Village, Drumshanbo and Drumkeeran. Carrick-on-Shannon railway station is on the Dublin Connolly to Sligo line, a short walk from the town centre, and Dublin to Sligo coaches stop locally. There are public car parks within a couple of minutes of the venue.
