At St. Mary's Church, Aughnasheelin · Aughnasheelin, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim

St. Mary's Church, Aughnasheelin, Co. Leitrim

What to Expect

A Mass of Thanksgiving and Farewell for Fr. Moses Malachy will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Aughnasheelin, on Friday 21 August 2026 at 8:00 PM. Fr. Moses has served as curate in the parish of Oughteragh and Drumreilly Lower, the Kilmore diocese parish that takes in the four church areas of Ballinamore, Aughnasheelin, Aughawillan and Corraleehan. He leaves to take up a new appointment in Corlough and Templeport parish, succeeding Fr. Seán Maguire, under the round of clerical changes announced by Bishop Martin that take effect from Monday 17 August 2026.

After the Mass there is a farewell social and presentation in Aughnasheelin Community Centre. The parish has invited people from all four church areas, not just Aughnasheelin, and the evening is open to anyone who knew Fr. Moses through parish life. The change matters locally beyond the send-off: the pastoral area drops from four priests to three, one for each of Corlough and Templeport, Kildallan and Ballyconnell, and Oughteragh and Drumreilly Lower. From the first weekend in October the parish moves to a revised weekend Mass rota, with Sunday Mass staying at 11:00 AM in Ballinamore and the other three churches sharing the remaining weekend Masses on a rotating basis.

Getting There

Aughnasheelin is a small village a short drive south of Ballinamore in east Leitrim, reached on local roads off the R199 and R208 network around the town. Ballinamore itself sits on the R202 about 25 minutes from Carrick-on-Shannon and roughly 30 minutes from Cavan town. There is parking at the church and at the community centre beside it, and the two are within easy walking distance of each other. Local Link services run to Ballinamore but not late in the evening, so most people attending will travel by car.
