At The Basin, Ballinamore · The Basin, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim
Walking for All is a free weekly led walk run by Leitrim Sports Partnership and funded through the PEACEPLUS programme. The Ballinamore group meets every Tuesday at 10:00 AM at the Basin, the harbour area on the town’s stretch of the Shannon and Erne Waterway. The next walk falls on Tuesday 18 August 2026. Each walk is led by a trained walk leader, and the programme describes the routes as accessible and social rather than fitness sessions, so the pace is set to suit the group rather than the fastest person in it.
The point of a led walk scheme like this is that nobody needs to know a route, own gear or already be fit to take part. Walkers register once through the Walking for All website and then simply turn up. Because it runs weekly on a fixed day and time, it works as a standing appointment rather than a course with a start and end date, and people join at any point in the year. Comfortable footwear and clothing for Leitrim weather are the only practical requirements. Leitrim Sports Partnership is the county’s statutory sport and physical activity body, based within Leitrim County Council, and further information on the Ballinamore walk is available from its development officer.
The Basin is the waterway harbour on the edge of Ballinamore town centre, within a few minutes’ walk of the main street. Ballinamore is on the R202 in east Leitrim, about 25 minutes by road from Carrick-on-Shannon, 20 minutes from Carrigallen, 30 minutes from Cavan town and 40 minutes from Enniskillen. There is free parking at the Basin itself and further free on-street parking through the town. Local Link services connect Ballinamore with Carrick-on-Shannon and Cavan on weekdays, and the mid-morning Tuesday start suits those timetables better than an early or evening event would.
