Dry Stone Wall Building Masterclass Weekend, The Organic Centre

At The Organic Centre · Rossinver, Co. Leitrim, F91 H978

A partly built dry stone wall with tools and stone laid out beside it

What to Expect

Dry stone walling is one of the practical heritage skills The Organic Centre has kept in its programme for years, and the masterclass runs as a full weekend rather than a taster day. The autumn 2026 dates are Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, running 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on both days, with the same masterclass repeated on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October. The tutor is Ronan Crehan. The fee is €260 for the two days.

A two-day format exists because walling is learned by doing it badly and then better, not by watching. Participants work with stone on the centre’s nineteen-acre site at Rossinver, which means the weekend is spent outdoors handling material rather than in a classroom. Dry stone construction uses no mortar, so the skill is in reading and placing stone so that the wall holds itself together, and that is a slow thing to acquire. Anyone booking should come with sturdy boots, work gloves and clothing for whatever north Leitrim weather does across a September or October weekend. Places are limited and booked through the centre’s online shop. The Organic Centre offers reduced rates to students and people on income supports, arranged by contacting the office rather than booking online.

Getting There

The Organic Centre is signposted off the R281 near Rossinver in north Leitrim, on the road between Manorhamilton and Kinlough along the southern shore of Lough Melvin. Manorhamilton is about 20 minutes by car, Kinlough and Bundoran 20 to 25 minutes, Enniskillen around 45 minutes and Sligo town roughly 50 minutes. Free parking is available on site. Public transport into Rossinver is very limited, so participants drive or car share, and the approach roads are narrow rural routes where extra time is worth allowing, particularly for a 10:00 AM start.
