What to Expect

Ballinamore Greenway parkrun is a free, timed 5k held every Saturday at 9:30 AM on the greenway beside the town’s stretch of the Shannon and Erne Waterway. Participants meet at the Junction. It is listed weekly in the local parish newsletter as a parkrun and walk, which reflects how it works in practice: the field is a mix of club runners, joggers, walkers and families, and there is no cut-off time or minimum pace. Like every parkrun, it is delivered entirely by local volunteers rather than by paid staff, and parkrun’s global model is funded by charitable donation rather than entry fees.

The format is identical to every other parkrun. Registration is a one-off process on the parkrun website, after which you get a personal barcode to print or save on your phone. Volunteers scan it at the finish line each week to record your time, and results appear online within a few hours. You register once, not before each run, and the same barcode works at any parkrun in the world. First-timers are asked to arrive around fifteen minutes early for a short briefing. The course itself is flat and well surfaced, which makes it manageable with buggies and suitable for people returning to exercise. Volunteers are needed every week to marshal, time and scan, and new volunteers can sign up through the same website.

Getting There

The start point sits close to Ballinamore town centre and is an easy walk from the main street and the town car parks. Ballinamore is on the R202 in east Leitrim, roughly 25 minutes by car from Carrick-on-Shannon, 20 minutes from Carrigallen, 30 minutes from Cavan town and 40 minutes from Enniskillen. There is free on-street parking near the start and further parking beside the waterway moorings. Local Link services run to Ballinamore on weekdays, so on a Saturday morning most participants arrive on foot or by car.
