Subtitle European Film Festival

At Multiple venues across Kilkenny City · Kilkenny City, Co. Kilkenny

A cinema screen in a darkened auditorium

Subtitle European Film Festival takes over venues across Kilkenny city from Monday 23 to Sunday 29 November 2026, the officially listed dates on Kilkenny County Council’s 2026 events calendar. Ireland’s only festival dedicated to popular subtitled European films, it typically screens thrillers, dramas and comedies from countries including Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, and has previously brought over 200 guests to the city, including European actors, directors and casting agents. It suits anyone who wants their cinema with a bit more range than the multiplex normally offers.

What to expect

In recent years the festival has used a spread of Kilkenny’s own venues rather than one dedicated cinema, including The Set Theatre, Watergate Theatre, Cleere’s and Billy Byrnes, turning the week into a city-wide event rather than a single-site programme. Expect a mix of Irish premieres alongside returning audience favourites, with past editions featuring titles such as Amélie, A Man Called Ove and The Intouchables alongside newer European releases. The festival also runs an industry strand connecting European acting talent with casting directors, which brings a working-festival energy beyond just the public screenings. Full day-by-day programming and the confirmed 2026 film lineup is published on subtitlefest.com closer to the festival.

Getting there

Kilkenny is on the M9 corridor around 90 minutes from Dublin and roughly 45 minutes from Waterford via the N10, with Bus Éireann coaches from Dublin Busáras and direct trains from Dublin Heuston to Kilkenny’s MacDonagh station. Because screenings are spread across several city centre venues, most of the festival is easily walkable once you are in Kilkenny, with metered street parking and central car parks available for anyone driving.

While you’re in Kilkenny

Late November is a good time to combine an evening screening with a quieter look at the city’s medieval streets, well clear of the summer crowds. There is more to see in Kilkenny and across Co. Kilkenny.
