Celbridge Library runs two free lace-making workshops on consecutive mornings during National Heritage Week 2026, both led by lace instructor Christina Kearney. Irish lace was a serious cottage industry in the nineteenth century, developed partly as Famine relief work and exported worldwide, and these sessions teach the techniques rather than just describing them.
The first, on Tuesday 18 August from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, is a beginners’ Irish crochet lace workshop for teenagers. Participants learn to make the Irish rose, the best-known of the three-dimensional motifs. Irish crochet was the first 3D crochet technique and sold across the world from the 1800s onward. The second, on Wednesday 19 August from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, is an introduction to Limerick lace and its design process, aimed at children aged 6 to 9 with a parent or guardian attending. That session covers the background to Limerick lace, some hands-on practice with basic stitching, and each child designing their own piece. Both workshops are free but need to be booked in advance.
Celbridge sits about 20 km west of Dublin, off the N4 and M4 and signposted from the motorway. The library is at St Patrick’s Park in the town, Eircode W23 VA47, with parking nearby. Hazelhatch and Celbridge railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Kildare commuter line is roughly 4 km from the town centre, and Dublin Bus runs services to Celbridge from the city. Both workshops are late-morning starts, so weekday bus and rail frequency is good.
