What to Expect

Gorey Men’s Shed opens twice a week from its premises on McCurtain Street in the middle of Gorey. Tuesdays run from 11am to 2pm and Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm, so between them the shed covers a late morning slot and a longer afternoon into early evening. The Thursday session is the longer of the two and tends to suit men who are still working part time or who have school runs in the morning.

The shed lists community project work, games, gardening and horticulture, outdoor activities and woodwork among its activities. That mix is deliberate. Some members come for the workshop and the tools, some for the garden, and some mainly for the company and a game. Men’s sheds in Ireland grew out of the observation that men tend to talk shoulder to shoulder over a task rather than face to face across a table, and the model has stuck because it works. Gorey is affiliated to the Irish Men’s Sheds Association, which supports sheds nationally through the Government of Ireland’s Scheme to Support National Organisations.

New members are welcome at any time of year. Phone one of the shed contacts first, then call in on a Tuesday or Thursday to see the place and meet a few of the members before committing to anything.

Getting There

McCurtain Street runs off the top of Gorey Main Street, so the shed is a short walk from the town centre shops and the Market House. Drivers coming from Dublin or Wexford leave the M11 at the Gorey junctions and follow signs for the town centre. There is on-street parking on and around Main Street plus public car parks off Esmonde Street. Gorey railway station, on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line, is about ten minutes’ walk. Wexford Bus and Bus Eireann services on the Dublin to Wexford route stop on Main Street.
