What to Expect

Gorey 51 is one of north Wexford’s established bridge clubs and it runs a weekly duplicate session at the Ashdown Park Hotel in Gorey. The club meets every Wednesday from September through to May, and players are asked to be seated by 7.15pm so the director can start the first board on time. The season restarts in September, which makes the early autumn sessions the natural point for new or returning players to come in.

The format is club pairs, affiliated to the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland, with results scored and published after each night. A hotel function room means a warm, well lit playing space, level access and parking on site, which matters for a club whose membership spans a wide age range. Bridge clubs generally ask that you arrive with a partner for a duplicate session, so if you are on your own it is worth ringing ahead to see whether the club can pair you up for the evening. Getting There

The Ashdown Park Hotel is on the edge of Gorey town, a short drive from the M11 at Junction 23, and it has a large free car park, which is the simplest option for an evening session. From Gorey Main Street it is a walk of roughly fifteen minutes. Gorey railway station on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line is about a mile away, though evening services are limited so most players drive. Wexford Bus and Bus Eireann services between Dublin and Wexford town stop in Gorey, and the town centre taxi ranks operate in the evening.
