What to Expect

Oscar Wilde gave Canon Chasuble and Miss Prism very little to do in The Importance of Being Earnest. This play hands them the stage and finds out what the pair were up to while everyone else fussed over cucumber sandwiches and a handbag in a railway cloakroom. In public they hold the line on Victorian respectability. In private there is blackmail, invented identity and a good deal of scheming about money.

The result is a sixty-minute comedy that works whether or not you know the Wilde play well, though the jokes land harder if you do. It has picked up strong notices on tour and comes to Courthouse Square as a Town Hall Theatre presentation for a single night at the end of September. At an hour with a straightforward 8pm Monday start it is one of the easier nights out in the autumn programme, and at €20, or €18 concession, the ticket price is at the lower end for the main stage.

Getting There

Town Hall Theatre is on Courthouse Square at the city end of the Salmon Weir Bridge, roughly five minutes from Eyre Square on foot via Eglinton Street and Woodquay. Drivers from Dublin, Athlone and Ballinasloe come in on the M6 and N6; from Limerick, Gort and Ennis take the M18 and N18. The Cathedral car park sits directly across the bridge, and the Corrib Shopping Centre multi-storey on Eglinton Street is a few minutes’ walk. Ceannt Station, for trains and Bus Éireann coaches, is around ten minutes away.
