What to Expect

This is the second part of Mikel Murfi’s Pat Farnon story, written, directed and performed by Murfi as a seventy-five minute monologue with no interval. Pat, the cobbler introduced in The Man in the Woman’s Shoes, is older now and life has taken an unexpected turn. Over the course of the evening he speaks for a whole parish of neighbours, each one summoned by a shift in voice and posture, and through them the play traces the mark that his wife Kitsy left on everyone around her.

The tone moves quickly between comedy and grief, which is what has kept the show in demand since it first toured. The London Evening Standard called it “pure distilled 100 per cent theatrical magic” and Time Out described it as “a masterclass in the art of the monologue”. The production comes from Sligo County Council Arts Services and The Hawk’s Well Theatre in Sligo. Town Hall Theatre programmes it alongside the first play on the previous night, and offers a combined ticket covering both.

Getting There

Town Hall Theatre is on Courthouse Square beside the Salmon Weir Bridge, five to seven minutes on foot from Eyre Square along Eglinton Street and Woodquay. Approach by road on the M6 and N6 from Dublin and the midlands, or the M18 and N18 from Limerick, Ennis and Shannon. Parking is easiest at the Cathedral car park across the bridge, with additional multi-storey spaces at the Corrib Shopping Centre. City bus services and Bus Éireann coaches serve Eyre Square, and Ceannt Station is about ten minutes’ walk from the theatre door.
