H.O.M.E. by Fidget Feet at Black Box Theatre

What to Expect

H.O.M.E. is billed as Ireland’s first aerial hip h’opera, a form its makers built by stacking aerial acrobatics, hip hop dance, spoken word and opera on top of each other. Nine performers work through material about identity, trust and what a person is capable of when the ground is taken away, with narration from the rapper Wilzee threading the sections together. Fidget Feet have been making aerial work in Ireland for years, and this collaboration with Tobi Omoteso pushes their vocabulary somewhere new.

The show was devised with the cast rather than written for them, so the personal stories on stage belong to the people telling them. That gives the piece its weight: alongside the physical spectacle of bodies moving in the air, it is a direct examination of the constraints society puts on those same bodies. It plays for one night at the Black Box as part of the Misleór Festival of Nomadic Cultures, run by Galway Traveller Movement, and the evening opens with a performance by participants from Sorcán and Circus.

Getting There

The Black Box Theatre is on Dyke Road, about fifteen minutes’ walk north of Eyre Square past Woodquay and the Galway Sportsground. Drivers coming from Dublin and the midlands take the M6 and N6 and follow the Headford Road into the city; from Limerick and Clare use the M18 and N18. There is a large car park at the venue itself on Dyke Road, which is the main reason the Black Box suits people driving in from Tuam, Headford and Oughterard. City bus services run along the Headford Road corridor, and Ceannt Station is roughly twenty minutes away on foot.
