What to Expect

Bridget and Frances are sisters who have not had to be in the same room for a long time. Their mother’s death puts them there. Happiness Then is a sixty-minute comedy drama that works through what surfaces once the funeral is over, moving between old grievance, unexpected humour and the possibility that the two of them might actually reach each other.

Elizabeth Moynihan wrote it and Liam Halligan directs, with Rachael Dowling and Sorcha Furlong playing the sisters. The production comes from Bernie Bourke and Liam Halligan in association with Bewley’s Café Theatre and Once Off Productions, a lineage that tends to mean tight, well-made short plays rather than sprawling ones. It plays Town Hall Theatre for a single evening in early October as part of the autumn drama strand.

Getting There

Town Hall Theatre stands on Courthouse Square at the city end of the Salmon Weir Bridge, five minutes from Eyre Square on foot through Eglinton Street and Woodquay. Drivers from Dublin, Athlone, Ballinasloe and Loughrea use the M6 and N6; the M18 and N18 bring traffic up from Gort, Ennis and Limerick. The Cathedral car park just over the bridge is closest, with the Corrib Shopping Centre multi-storey a short walk away. Ceannt Station, handling trains and Bus Éireann coaches, is about ten minutes from the theatre.
