Earthfall by Undercurrent at Town Hall Theatre

At Town Hall Theatre · Courthouse Square, Galway City, Co. Galway

Dancers and circus performers mid-movement on a lit stage in Galway

What to Expect

Earthfall puts dance theatre and circus in the same room and pulls the vocabulary of each from three traditions: Zimbabwean, Brazilian and Irish. Four people find themselves inside a rule-bound world where the boundaries keep moving, watched by a young girl whose view of it slides between nightmare and waking. As they work their way through an increasingly tangled maze, it is the connection between them that lets them push back against the restrictions.

The company, Undercurrent, casts both Irish and international dancers working in contemporary and cultural forms, and the show carries a clear political charge alongside the physical spectacle. It reads as a celebration of what different dance traditions look like side by side, and at the same time as a piece about borders and what immigration policy does to the people caught inside it. The performance lasts fifty-five minutes with no interval and is recommended for ages 10 and over, which makes it one of the more accessible options in the early autumn Town Hall programme for families with older children.
