What to Expect

Rónán Ó Snodaigh is best known as the bodhrán player and singer of Kíla, the band that spent three decades pulling Irish traditional music towards something looser and more percussive. His work with the film-maker and musician Myles O’Reilly is a quieter proposition: sparse arrangements built around Ó Snodaigh’s voice and hand drum, with O’Reilly adding keys, guitar and atmosphere. The pair have released several albums together, mostly written in Irish.

An Taibhdhearc is the right room for it. The national Irish-language theatre on Middle Street seats a few hundred and has the intimacy of a small hall rather than a concert venue, which suits material that depends on the audience being able to hear breath and fingertips. Tickets are €20 and are sold through the theatre’s own Ticketsolve box office. The show falls on the Saturday of the first weekend in September, when the city is between the Galway Races and the autumn festival season.

Getting There

An Taibhdhearc is on Middle Street in Galway’s Latin Quarter, a couple of minutes’ walk from Shop Street and about seven minutes from Eyre Square. The streets around it are pedestrianised, so drivers should aim for the Ceannt Station car park on Station Road or the Corrib Shopping Centre multi-storey on Eglinton Street and walk the last few hundred metres. Approach the city on the M6 and N6 from Dublin and the midlands, or the M18 and N18 from Limerick and Clare. Ceannt Station itself, for trains and Bus Éireann coaches, is a five minute walk away.
