What to Expect

Ralph McTell has been writing and touring for more than fifty years, and Somewhere Down the Road is billed as his final Irish national tour. The show is shaped as a look back across that span, with the songs interleaved with the stories behind them, which is how McTell has always performed. Streets of London made his name in the early seventies but the catalogue behind it is deep and largely unshowy, built on fingerstyle guitar and plain, careful lyric writing.

The tour coincides with a new album on which songs from his catalogue with an Irish connection are reinterpreted by Irish musicians he admires, so expect some of that material in the set alongside the standards. The Galway date runs 120 minutes including an interval and starts at 8pm on the Sunday, with tickets at €34. Given the farewell framing, this is likely to be the last chance to see him play the room.

Getting There

Town Hall Theatre is on Courthouse Square beside the Salmon Weir Bridge, five minutes’ walk from Eyre Square via Eglinton Street and Woodquay. Drivers approach on the M6 and N6 from Dublin, Athlone and Ballinasloe, or the M18 and N18 from Limerick, Gort and Ennis. The Cathedral car park across the bridge is the nearest large car park, with the Corrib Shopping Centre multi-storey a few minutes away on Eglinton Street. Ceannt Station serves trains and Bus Éireann coaches and is around ten minutes on foot, though Sunday services are lighter than midweek so check return times.
