Foy Vance: The Wake World Tour at Town Hall Theatre

At Town Hall Theatre · Courthouse Square, Galway City, Co. Galway

A singer songwriter at a piano under warm stage lighting in Galway

What to Expect

The Wake is Foy Vance’s seventh album and the end of something he began a long time ago. The cycle started with the death of his father in 1999 and ran through seven records from his 2007 debut Hope onwards, and this one closes it. Ethan Johns produced, which pushes the sound towards the live-room warmth Johns is known for, and the writing sits where Vance has always worked: folk structures with soul phrasing and a strong pull towards southern blues.

The material is direct about grief, faith and what is left after a long reckoning, and Vance’s live shows tend to be built around the voice rather than production. Roisin Dubh present the Galway date at the Town Hall Theatre rather than in their own Dominick Street room, which means a seated main-stage show. It falls on the Friday of Halloween weekend, when the city is busy with the Macnas parade and the Gaillimh Ah-Boo! programme.

The Cathedral car park across the bridge is the nearest large car park and the Corrib Shopping Centre multi-storey is close by, though both fill fast on Halloween weekend.
