What to Expect

Donovan is eighty and still touring. The Tale of the Gael is a retrospective built around his Celtic roots and six decades of songwriting, taking in the hits that put him on the radio in the mid-sixties and the folk material from his earliest albums. Catch The Wind, Mellow Yellow and Sunshine Superman are in the set, along with songs that sit closer to the traditional end of his catalogue.

The show is framed as a journey through the four Celtic nations that shaped him, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, and it leans on the fingerpicked guitar style and light, unforced vocal that made his early records distinctive. Running time is 110 minutes. He plays the Town Hall Theatre main stage for one night at the start of October, presented by The Headline Agency.

Getting There

Town Hall Theatre stands on Courthouse Square beside the Salmon Weir Bridge, five minutes’ walk from Eyre Square through Eglinton Street and Woodquay. Drivers approach from Dublin, Athlone and Ballinasloe on the M6 and N6, and from Limerick, Gort and Ennis on the M18 and N18. The Cathedral car park directly across the bridge is the nearest large car park, with the Corrib Shopping Centre multi-storey a few minutes away. Ceannt Station, for trains and Bus Éireann coaches, is around ten minutes on foot, which makes a Friday night trip in from Athenry, Oranmore or Loughrea manageable.
