What to Expect

Kevin Rowland has spent decades refusing to be a nostalgia act, and for most of the last twenty years the band recorded and toured simply as Dexys. This tour is the first under the full Dexys Midnight Runners name since 2003, which signals a set drawing more heavily on the run of hits that made them one of the defining British bands of the early eighties, including two number one singles and a string of top ten placings.

The Birmingham group have always been a live proposition first, built on a brass-led sound and Rowland’s particular vocal intensity, and they have never quite settled into a fixed line-up or a fixed style. The Galway show is fully seated at the Black Box, and under-18s are welcome when accompanied by an adult. It falls on a Friday night at the start of November.

Getting There

The Black Box Theatre is on Dyke Road, about fifteen minutes’ walk north of Eyre Square through Woodquay and past the Galway Sportsground. Drivers from Dublin, Athlone and Ballinasloe take the M6 and N6 and follow the Headford Road into the city; the M18 and N18 bring traffic up from Limerick, Gort and Ennis. The venue has a large car park of its own on Dyke Road, which is why it suits people driving in from Tuam, Headford, Claregalway and Oughterard. City buses run the Headford Road corridor and Ceannt Station is roughly twenty minutes away on foot.
