At Black Box Theatre · Dyke Road, Galway City, Co. Galway
Country Superstars runs through the standards of American country music with a cast of impressionists rather than a straight covers band. Sarah Jayne fronts it as Dolly Parton, with Andy Crust alongside her, and between them the show covers Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Billie Jo Spears, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, Garth Brooks, John Denver, Glen Campbell and Shania Twain. The Country Superstars Band back the whole thing live.
The production bills itself as the world’s biggest country music tribute touring show and its cast has played London’s West End, the Leicester Square Theatre, the Grand Ole Opry and Nashville’s Broadway. It runs 125 minutes including an interval and is fully seated, so this is a concert-hall night rather than a standing gig. Country has a deep audience in east Galway and south Mayo, and this is the main tribute date on the Galway city autumn calendar.
The Black Box Theatre is on Dyke Road, roughly fifteen minutes’ walk north of Eyre Square past Woodquay and the Galway Sportsground. Drivers from Dublin, Athlone, Ballinasloe and Loughrea take the M6 and N6 and follow the Headford Road into the city; from Limerick, Gort and Ennis use the M18 and N18. There is a large car park at the venue on Dyke Road, which makes this the easiest theatre in Galway to drive to from Tuam, Headford, Claregalway and Oughterard. City buses run the Headford Road corridor and Ceannt Station is about twenty minutes on foot.
