Guided Holy Hour with Live Music at Galway Cathedral

What to Expect

Every Monday evening Galway Cathedral holds a guided Holy Hour with live music, running from 8pm to 9pm. It is a led hour rather than an open one: the structure is set out from the front, with music running through it, so people who would find a silent hour daunting have something to follow. Admission is free and there is nothing to book.

The diocesan calendar lists the same 8pm to 9pm slot week after week through late summer and autumn 2026, with dates confirmed on 17, 24 and 31 August, 7 and 14 September, then 21 and 28 September and on into October on 5, 12, 19 and 26 October. The cathedral is a good building for this. Its dome and stone surfaces give live instruments and voices a long tail, and an evening congregation of thirty sounds considerably larger than it is. The hour sits alongside the cathedral’s separate daytime Eucharistic Adoration, which runs most days from 11:30am to 6pm, so the Monday evening slot is the one to pick if daytime hours do not suit.

Getting There

Galway Cathedral is on Gaol Road at the Salmon Weir Bridge, about ten minutes on foot from Eyre Square and five from the courthouse. The cathedral has its own car park and there is paid on-street parking on the surrounding roads, which is easier to find at 8pm than during the working day. City bus services run to Eyre Square and Ceannt Station is a short walk away. By road, take the M6 and N6 from Dublin and the east, the N17 from Tuam, the N18 from Limerick and Ennis, or the N59 from Clifden and Connemara.
