What to Expect

The Assumption, on 15 August, is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Irish Catholic calendar, and it carries extra weight at Galway Cathedral. Our Lady Assumed into Heaven is one of the two dedicatees of the building, and the cathedral itself was dedicated on 15 August 1965. The feast is therefore the cathedral’s own patronal day as well as a diocesan one.

Two Masses are published for 2026. A vigil Mass takes place on Friday 14 August at 6:00 PM, with the rosary prayed during it. The Mass of the day follows on Saturday 15 August at 11:00 AM. Either fulfils the obligation for anyone who observes it. Attendance on the Assumption is traditionally higher than on an ordinary weekday, and the cathedral’s size means it absorbs a big congregation without difficulty, though arriving a little early is the sensible move if you want a seat with a clear view of the sanctuary. There is no admission charge and no ticket. Visitors who simply want to see the building on its dedication anniversary are welcome to attend either liturgy.

Getting There

Galway Cathedral stands on Nun’s Island between the Salmon Weir and the University of Galway, about twelve minutes on foot from Eyre Square over the Salmon Weir Bridge. Drivers should use the cathedral car park off Gaol Road, signposted from University Road and from the Dyke Road approach. City buses running along University Road and Newcastle Road stop within a short walk, and Ceannt Station in the city centre is around fifteen minutes away on foot. Saturday morning traffic through the city centre can be heavy in August, so leave extra time if you are coming in from Salthill, Knocknacarra or Oranmore.
