St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church runs a week of hands-on traditional craft workshops in August 2026, using the building itself as the teaching context. Five strands are listed: stained glass painting on 17 August at €70, woodworking on 17 and 18 August free of charge, stone carving on 20 and 21 August at €90, textiles on 20 and 21 August at €50, and ironworking on 20 and 21 August at €120. St Nicholas’ was founded in 1320 and is the largest medieval parish church still in continuous use in Ireland, which means every craft on the list is represented somewhere in the fabric of the building: carved limestone, leaded glass, ironwork and joinery that has been repaired and replaced by hand for seven hundred years. The workshops are practical rather than lecture-based, so numbers are limited and booking ahead matters. The same week the church hosts two Esker Festival orchestral concerts, on 18 and 22 August.
The church is on Lombard Street, off Shop Street inside the pedestrianised medieval quarter, about five minutes’ walk from Eyre Square and two from the Spanish Arch end of Quay Street. There is no parking at the church. Use the multi-storey car parks on the edge of the city centre and walk in, and if you are carrying tools or materials, allow for that last few hundred metres on foot. Ceannt Station and the Eyre Square bus stops are both close. Drivers reach Galway on the M6 and N6 from Dublin, the N17 from Tuam, the N18 from Ennis and the N59 from Clifden.
