On the last Thursday of every month Galway City Museum keeps its doors open until 9pm and fills the extra hours with programming: immersive performances, talks, workshops and one-off events across the building’s three floors. The August 2026 date is Thursday 27 August, running from 5pm to 9pm. Admission is free and no booking is required, so you can call in on the way home rather than planning around it.
Museum Lates is part of Galway’s Night-Time Economy Programme, funded through the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport’s After Hours at the Museum scheme with support from Galway City Council. The idea behind it is straightforward: most people cannot get to a museum between nine and five, so move some of the museum into the evening instead. The series runs monthly from June to December 2026, which means further dates through the autumn on the last Thursday of September, October, November and December. The line-up changes each month and is published on the museum’s own events page.
Galway City Museum is on Spanish Parade beside the Spanish Arch, at the point where Quay Street meets the Corrib, five minutes’ walk from Shop Street and about ten from Eyre Square. There is no museum car park, so use one of the multi-storey car parks on the ring of the city centre and walk in through the old town; evening rates are cheaper than daytime. Ceannt Station and the Eyre Square bus stops are both within walking distance. By road, use the M6 and N6 from Dublin, the N17 from Tuam, the N18 from Ennis and the N59 from Connemara.
